Good and Bad [Jun. 26th, 2010|12:19 am]

I think my plants like to do stuff right after I've posted, just to mix things up a little.

Pepper flower and the leavesCollapse )

You've been dying to know how my plants are doing, haven't you? [Jun. 24th, 2010|10:55 pm]

There's been some progress on the plants, as well as progress on my posting procrastination.

Here be imagesCollapse )

This concludes your irregular and unscheduled garden update.

You're a pepper! [Jun. 9th, 2010|11:28 am]

My morning dirt dampness determination was met with a happy sight today...

They're alive! [Jun. 7th, 2010|03:50 pm]

As reported here, two weeks ago tomorrow I planted some seeds and seedlings on my balcony. Since then, I've done a pretty good job of keeping their dirt wet, which seems to be my only plant related job for the moment. I am happy to report that my wettening appears to be successful! On Friday I went out to water, and noticed something different in the basil pot...

Life!Collapse )

The other peppers have not sprouted yet, but I am told that this is to be expected. You can expect that there will definitely be pictures when that happens. I'm sure you're very excited.

Plants [May. 25th, 2010|08:53 pm]

Well, I don't post here all that much, so I suspect this topic will pretty much dominate my LJ presence (assuming I keep it up and keep writing about it). This seems like a good place, if for no other reason than dates will be easy to keep track of and I'll know when things have gone horribly wrong.

A little while back, I went on a little hunt to find some Bhut Jolokia peppers. They are supposed to be significantly spicier than Habaneros, which I love, so I wanted to try some.

My quick hunt led only to seeds for sale on the internet. I realized that I have a huge mostly unused balcony, I live in a very friendly climate, and it's pretty much planting season. So I decided right there I was going to grow some peppers on my balcony.

Talking about that some led to deciding I should plant a few more things. Peppers take a long time to germinate from seed and even longer to grow to maturity, so if I grew ONLY peppers it might be a long and frustrating process. Tomatoes and peppers combine to form delicious salsa, so they were a bit of a no brainer, and my favorite little birdy picked up a packet of purple basil seeds for me. In addition, because of the confused and horrified looks I got from my gardening friends at the idea that I was growing from seeds, I picked up a couple of tomato seedlings and a hot pepper seeding to give my greenery a kick start. Oh, and when I ordered the bhuts I also got some "chocolate habaneros", since that's different than what I see at the store.

All of these are now happily in wet fertilized dirt on my large south facing balcony, which I get the feeling will get about the right amount of sun. The non-sprouted seeds are closest to the wall, since all of the bags of dirt said "avoid direct sunlight".

I assume that for the time being "keep them wet" is all I need to do, so I'll add that to my morning routine. Once there's natural light again, I'll take some pictures, but it's not all too terribly interesting at the moment. Well, it'll probably never be interesting to anyone but me, but this is live journal.

godfuckingdamnit [Aug. 7th, 2008|10:47 pm]
[mood |annoyedannoyed]

Tonight, my patches for SnowJob arrived!

This motivated me to try and start some minor sewing projects for the BFCT, the most minor of which was putting a patch on something.

So I got out the trusty sewing machine. "Hm", I think, "this fell out of my closet when I was moving stuff into my now-extra bedroom. It sustained some superficial damage, but the damn thing is 90% metal, so it should be okay, right?"

And it sure seems okay! ... until you put a needle in it. Something is torqued just enough to make the needle hit the front of the plate instead of going into the little hole. It's literally the width of a needle off.

The whole damn thing is metal. Even after some disassembling I don't see any possible way to adjust this other than "twist it the other way". Which I certainly can't do, because the whole damn thing is metal.

Fucking hell. It might work for now if I bend the needle just a leeeedle bit at the top. Maybe. It seems like the wrong idea, but I'm lost.

That does work, but I stand by my "goddammit". Bending needles to fit is not Doing It Right.

i think my metabolism slowed down another notch [Aug. 4th, 2008|08:51 pm]
[mood |annoyedannoyed]

A few weeks ago, I felt like my weight had been creeping up again, and a hop on the dreaded scale confirmed it. The number on that evil little display was 10-15 higher than I'd like it to be - and that much higher than makes most of my jeans fit well.

So I decided to cut back a few sources of calories and get a wee bit more active again. The calorie cutting has probably been a little more effective than the activity, and even though I knew I wasn't doing a great job I felt like I was doing a little better.

The scale tonight says no, since it's now 5 higher than when I started. *sigh*

I know weight fluctuates, this isn't the time of day I usually weigh myself, and I did it after eating. All of which probably contribute to it reading a bit high.

Nevertheless, that number is a bit disheartening.

i can has pie? [Jul. 6th, 2008|06:04 pm]
I have a frozen apple pie that I got in Julian.

If I make this pie, I will be the only one around to eat it.

Which makes it far too likely that I will have pie for dinner.

What's keeping you from your dream job?
As far as I know, there are no paid positions available in the napping field, despite my expert knowledge of it.
